Food and Beer Pairing Case Study: San Diego

BEER AND FOOD PAIRING CASE STUDY: SAN DIEGO

This blog is written in San Diego, usually, home of mean double IPAs and even heavier beers like Arrogant Bastard. But there is a smooth side to San Diego Beer Drinking when it's paired with a perfect match: the fish taco.

A light golden ale or lager goes great with fish tacos, which usually feature fried whitefish, grilled wahoo or marinated mahi-mahi. Cabbage and Mexican white sauce add a crispness that complements beers such as Stone Pale Ale, Kona Longboard Lager and Karl Strauss Endless Summer.

Two of the best places to get fish tacos and beer are in my favorite neighborhood, Ocean Beach. Try Tower 2 or South Beach Bar & Grill ( note: South Beach is also known for its sexy lady folk which also pair well with golden ales and lagers).

Here is a great blog posting that tells the truth about fish tacos: Alice Q. Foodie: The Truth about Fish Tacos...

Beer and Food Pairing Video by the CIA

Here is a video put out by the CIA that is a great introduction to beer and food pairing.

Note: CIA stands for the Culinary Institute of America.

Summary: A little bit of history, a whole lot of beer. This chef suggests America was founded because Pilgrims were running out of beer. This video discusses beer and food pairings such as gumbo, BBQ chicken pizza and oatmeal cookies.

See you tomorrow!

Beer and Food for the uber-beginner

Here is the least you need to know about Beer and Food pairing.

(This information is paraphrased from a short article called Pairing Beer and Food by Kevin Gray)

  • dark, heavier beers with meats
  • lighter beers with fish, chicken and salads.
  • acidity of a highly hopped ales cuts through the richness of fattier foods like cheese or fried fish, whereas sweeter, malty beers can cut through the spiciness of Asian or Mexican dishes.
Kevin writes, " Selecting beers and foods based on regional associations is also generally a good way to ensure a proper pairing. For instance, Mexican beers are often light and acidic, which naturally pairs well with spicy Mexican food, while Japanese lagers are a good compliment to sushi. Conveniently, most ethnic restaurants typically offer several traditional beers to make your pairings easy." A perfect lead in to a soon-to-come post on a Beer and Food Pairing Case Study: San Diego.

Welcome to The Beer and Food Pairing Blog

Welcome to The Beer and Food Pairing Blog!

Please follow this blog as we are brand new and looking forward to sharing exciting news, tips and recipes in the world of beer and food pairing.

The inspiration for this blog came from an event that one of the authors used to hold in Chico, California (home of the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company and Butte Creek Brewery) called “The Stout and Trout Homebrew Competition”. Though we usually drank hoppy home brew and ate fried catfish.

Around the same time the author and a friend, then students at Chico State, won second place with a 1998 Bay Area Brew-off by entering a dark, coffee porter in the stout category. Interestingly, they were only 19 years old, much too young (at least here in the USA) to collect the award in person.

When the glossy red ribbon arrived in the mail, we opened the last two Muddy Porters to celebrate.
